Hi, my name is Durees Newell. I teach middle school English/Language Arts, in addition to being the Yearbook Advisor. I have a Master's degree in Educational Technology along with a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in Education. I am married with three children and one BIG dog; a few of my hobbies include skiing, hanging out with my family and friends, and reading.
ELA classes: An integrated approach is used for reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students regularly read in order to comprehend complex texts. They learn how to cite text evidence when discussing or writing about texts. They learn how to annotate the texts and use the annotations to create a deeper meaning of what they are reading.
Students will write, and write, and write in my classes. I utilize the Step Up To Writing methodology along with the 6+1 Traits of Writing to teach this necessary skill. Students will engage in Writers Workshop, research, essay, paragraph, and reading- response writings throughout the year.
Lastly, I facilitate a claymation class during the middle school's weekly electives. In this class, students storyboard a story that they will film using stop-motion filming. It's always enjoyable and rewarding to watch the students as they become filmmakers and claymation experts.
